5 Ways to Get Involved in the Community This Fall
There are a few times each year that feel like a fresh start, and fall is just one of them. With school back in session, the cooler weather rolling in, and the holiday season on the horizon, we’re breaking down a few easy ways to connect with neighbors across Western Massachusetts this fall.
#1: ATTEND A COMMUNITY EVENT
Can you think of anything better than an afternoon outside in the warm autumn sun? Thankfully, there are community events across Western Massachusetts that allow you to connect with your neighbors, see your friends, and relax after the chaos of a long week.
There’s a ton of community calendars that will break down everything to do. But to get you started — take a look at our upcoming comedy show on October 24th or our Pickleball Tournament on November 8th. You can enjoy a night of laughter, drinks, and a dinner buffet or get active with friends and win some big cash!
#2: ENJOY LOCAL RESTAURANTS
If you’re looking for something quick, try a local restaurant after your long day at work. Avoid the work of cooking and support a small business at the same time — it doesn’t get better than that! Our recommendation is the Maple Leaf Pub in Westfield on October 13th (and that definitely has nothing to do with our dineout fundraiser from 5-9:30pm!) or Shortstop Bar and Grill in Westfield any night of the weekend.
And if you’re up for a sweet treat, definitely head over to Northside Creamery before they close for the season. It’s the best homemade ice cream around!
#3: VOLUNTEER AT A LOCAL NONPROFIT
Beyond events and small businesses, there are so many nonprofits who need help, too. It’s a great way to channel your interests and build a sense of community, all while supporting your town. Of course, we’re always looking for volunteers, but our recipients are great options too. Pick whatever cause is most important to you!
Brittney’s Believers raises awareness of childhood cancer and advocates for better treatment/funding. And Rick’s Place provides youth grief support for children ages 5-18 and their families. Looking for something hands-on? Rachel’s Table is perfect for that, which brings us to our next point.
#4: TRY SOMETHING NEW
Get out there and do something you’ve never done before! Our recommendation is gleaning with Rachel’s Table, which our youth team wants to give a shot too. Gleaning is the practice of gathering grain or produce after harvest. Or try thrifting for a fall outfit, taking a scenic drive, or enjoying an autumn picnic at a local park.
#5: CONNECT WITH YOUR PEOPLE
This one’s the most important to us. Whether you’re helping someone else, trying something new, enjoying a delicious meal, or attending an event — make sure it’s with the people you care about.
At Youth for Change, we know our community is really important. Not just our community as a whole, but our family of volunteers, our teens on our team, and our friends and family who support us through the highs and lows. Use these opportunities to connect with the pepple you care about most and soak in the magic of the fall season before the holidays roll in.
